Position Yourself As An Expert

For some, you can brag about yourself like there’s no tomorrow. You know that you’re good at what you do and you know that you can hit a home run each and every time. If that’s you, more power to you! I’m sorta jealous – ok, more than just sorta.

But, for the rest of us – it’s hard to brag about your hard work because we look at all the other people out there doing FAR better and for FAR longer than you have. (Comparison is the worst.) Which, in and of itself deals with a whole other slew of issues like imposter syndrome and confidence in your business. For me, I have the hardest time bragging about myself because I don’t know how to do it! Everyone else is so awesome – I’m just another sheep in a really really big flock.

It took me a long time to realize that I am, as a matter of fact, an expert in my field. It took one phone call from Stephanie Hoffman – where she set my mindset straight. So, I’m here to set your mindset straight too.

My girl Stephanie helped me realize that I was in my own head far too much! (Does anyone else have this problem? Cause, I certainly do!) We were talking about business and I said something along the lines of, “I need to build up my credibility and then I can do X,Y,Z.” She stopped me right in my tracks and said, “Wait a minute – just a minute ago you told me you have a degree in graphic design. What do you mean you’re not credible?!”

That threw me for a loop! I mean – come on. I just worked my butt off to get that hard earned degree and I wasn’t using it to my advantage. I was discrediting myself because I didn’t think about all the time, money, blood, sweat, and tears I poured into myself!

So, let me ask you some questions:

Why don’t you feel credible?
What is your niche?
What are you good at? Come on. Be honest. We’re all good at something!
How long have you been doing that thing you’re so good at?

So, you’re telling me that you’re really good at *insert thing here* and have been doing it for *insert years here* and you don’t feel credible?

Let me tell you a little secret – you may not know this – so, I’m going to tell it to you straight. You, yes you, you are amazing at what you do! You are credible because you have been working at this for so long and have poured countless hours into this.

You are your own worst critic. Heck, I’m my own worst critic. That’s why I needed Stephanie to set me straight. Otherwise I would have continued to have negative thoughts towards myself. So, I’m here to set you straight.

Ladies, you are amazing at what you do.

So, now that we have that out of the way – here’s some tips to position yourself as an expert in your niche and some things you can do to further your expertise and build rapport with your clients.

  1. Start that blog that you’ve been putting off! Read this blog post to help you start a blog in less than 5 minutes.

Write about what you know and are an expert in. You only think like you do and know what you know, so let the world hear your voice and what you have to say! I recommend also guest posting on other sites. Sometimes bloggers will let you do a blog swap, so you’ll write for them and they’ll write for you. You then gain access to each other's audiences which is beneficial for everyone involved. Just make sure that your audience will appreciate what your guest blogger has to say.

  2. Host a workshop – This could be a really fun thing to do especially if you’re not into blogging 100% of the time. If you make physical products like signs, cards, painting, etc. or simply want to show others how to do your thing in person. A workshop would be perfect for you.

  3. Be an expert on social media - be present in different groups on social media and when someone asks a question be there to answer it! That’s one sure fire way to build rapport and build a name for yourself if someone knows they can go to you for all the questions.

  4. Speak at a conference – This one isn’t for everyone. If you’re like me and the thought of talking on the stage gives you instant anxiety and makes you want to curl into a ball – then maybe this isn’t your calling. But if the thought of speaking in front of hundreds if not thousands of people talking about what you’re most passionate about makes your heart race in excitement. This is something right up your alley then!

I just want to remind you that you are awesome at what you do. Sure, you’re not perfect (but let me tell you another secret), nobody is! Sure, you have made mistakes you’d rather not admit to! But that’s ok – why? Because we’ve all made mistakes. So, take your amazing self and get out there and let the world know what you have to say.

Keep on keepin' on, my friends –
